I-ELLA: Tell us a little about what you do.
Deana: I'm the president and creative director of the eco-luxury site, Green With Glamour (www.greenwithglamour.com). I collaborate with some incredible "green" designers and also do environmentally-mindful (yet high-style) interior design. It's my mission to prove that high style and a "thoughtful" life can easily go hand in hand.
I-ELLA: What’s the “coolest” part of your job as a blogger?
Deana: It took me a while to warm up to blogging, but now I love sharing cool lifestyle ideas, vegan recipes, vintage shopping tips, home design concepts and of course news and new products at Green With Glamour. I also lean on a small group of contributing writers for stories on ethical beauty, celebrity gossip and travel, so I guess the coolest part is editing a blog that dishes on all of the above!
I-ELLA: How would you define your personal style?
Deana: My style is very much classically American -- not in that I favor American designers, but that the looks I put together are a cross between old-school prep and glammy vamp. Let's call it a cross between Ali McGraw in “Love Story” and Marilyn Monroe in “The Seven Year Itch.” It's an oddball combo, but I think I make it work because both sides are very much me.
I-ELLA: Who or what inspires you on a daily basis?
Deana: Prepare for some serious cornball. I'm a mid-Westerner and I've always enjoyed courtesies shared between strangers. Now that I live in L.A. -- a city that is half-filled with social barbarians and half-filled with the nicest people you'll ever meet -- I love seeing total strangers with no agenda being compassionate to one another. It reaffirms a strong belief of mine -- that people are fundamentally good. I'm also a passionate advocate for animal rights (and proud "owner" of seven rescues). I am ceaselessly inspired by animals and animal lovers. And for the ultimate cornball, I am in perpetual awe of my husband. He produces a massive and complicated television show and makes it look as if it's done with ease. He is an incredibly kind, even and impressive man.
I-ELLA: What catches your eye when shopping?
Deana: Oddly, pattern, though I'm way more likely to design a sofa in a bold print than wear one. I'm a sucker for clean, sexy lines as well -- frills, no; sexy curves, yes! Also, attention to detail. So much of current clothing, jewelry, handbags, shoes, etc. looks so boringly alike. I look for a detail or two that separates a piece from the pack.
I-ELLA: What’s the most meaningful thing in your closet?
Deana: That's easy. The double ply, circle-pattern embossed, crisp, creme cotton, sleeveless, deep V-neckline Piazza Sempione top I wore on the day my husband and I eloped. A decade has passed since I bought it, and there hasn't been a day since when I couldn't wear it and look completely des rigueur. We're about to go away for our 10th anniversary, and I'm packing it for a special dinner. It's stunning.
I-ELLA: Who is your favorite designer/brand and why?
Deana: Oh wow. There's no way I can choose just one. My favorite lines that we carry at GWG are Koch for their easy, breezy, elegant silhouettes; Popomomo for her wearable edge; and I'm newly obsessed with Lavuk. For jewelry, I'm a big fan of DLC Brooklyn, and for shoes and handbags, I'm a Stella McCartneygirl. I'm a sucker for designers who employ compassion in their work.
I-ELLA: How often do you clean out your closet? Do you have any tips for our users?
Deana: I am constantly weeding out my closet. The first things to go are the "trendy" pieces that I'll buy in a moment of weakness and never/hardly wear. I'm trying badly to just stop buying such pieces, but probably once or twice a year, I'll purchase something that's simply not me and it often gets donated with tags still on. My advice is to keep a donation bag going at all times. If you put something on a couple of times and it doesn't make it out of the house, put it right into the bag.
I-ELLA: What are your three simple rules to live by?
Deana: Think about what you purchase -- where it's produced (also who's producing it) and what impact it has on the planet (because absolutely everything does). Buy quality; not only does it just look, feel and fit better, but a good piece should last quite some time. Stay true to your own style; unless you own your look, you're always going to appear to be borrowing someone else's.
I-ELLA: What are your I-ELLA Top Picks?
Deana: The Alexander McQueen Blouse and the Stella McCartney Studded Handbag!
